Te Whare Āhuru Mōwai
A secluded wellness retreat on the dunes at South Piha.
About
Āhuru Mōwai means a calm place: a sheltered haven, somewhere you feel safe and at peace. The name fits.
This is a 75m² converted shed at the end of a long, semi-private driveway, well back from the road. Inside, the ceilings are high and there’s plenty of natural light. There’s a large living area, a generous dining table and a well-equipped kitchenette. The bedroom has a super-king bed, and up on the mezzanine there’s a private sitting area.
The wellness setup is the real draw. You’ve got a private sauna with views, a cold plunge, a swim spa and a hot spa. The big veranda is made for long afternoons, with shade umbrellas, outdoor seating and a wood-fired and gas pizza oven.
The property runs on tank water with solar backup. Old trees surround it, including a rare golden pōhutukawa. You can walk to the beach, the village cafés, the bush tracks and the waterfall, so there’s no need to hunt for a park in summer.
Best for:
Couples, small groups and special occasions.
Worth knowing:
It’s a 3-minute walk to South Piha Beach.
It’s best suited to two, but four fold-out single bunks on the ground floor take extra guests.
The property is on tank water.
Details:
One super-king bedroom, a mezzanine lounge and four single bunks on the ground floor.
