About

IYOGA is Vanessa Greenwood's Piha-based yoga practice — and one of the most experienced Iyengar Yoga operations in Aotearoa. Vanessa has been teaching since 1999 and is a Level 3 Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher, one of the highest levels of certification in the Iyengar tradition. For twenty-five years she has been building a practice that combines classical Iyengar precision with a broader understanding of the body developed through parallel study in naturopathy, nutrition, and massage therapies.

Vanessa teaches from two Piha venues. Group classes run at the Schoolhouse Hall, in a fully equipped yoga studio on Seaview Road behind the West Coast Gallery — Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, 9.30 to 11am, $28. Private sessions and group day retreats run from her IYOGA Studio at 100 Piha Road, also fully equipped with specialist alignment equipment. The two-venue set-up means Vanessa can support students from complete beginners through to those working on specific therapeutic goals.

Beyond the regular classes, IYOGA offers a full range of specialist services. Remedial Therapy Yoga is one-on-one work prescribed to manage chronic conditions and injuries — back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, insomnia, musculoskeletal issues, perimenopause symptoms, pre-and-postnatal care. Private sessions are personalised for individual needs, whether that's addressing a specific health concern, learning particular sequences and equipment, or working toward a sport or health goal. IYOGA retreats run throughout the year — 1 to 5 day retreats in Piha, plus international retreats in Bali and Rarotonga. Online classes run Monday and Thursday evenings, 6 to 7.30pm via Zoom, with three teachers available across the schedule. All levels welcome.

Vanessa's approach is built around restoring the body's trust and tranquility. Her method aligns all the systems of the body to support healing, build resilience, and regulate the nervous system. It's a sophisticated practice offered by someone whose depth of experience and study genuinely matches the tradition she teaches.

Specialist alignment equipment is also available for purchase on request.

Best for:

Yoga students at any level, people managing chronic conditions or injuries, pre-and-postnatal students, retreat participants, anyone wanting classical Iyengar precision from a highly experienced teacher.

Worth knowing:

One of only a small number of Level 3 Senior Iyengar teachers in New Zealand — this is genuinely specialist practice, not general studio yoga.
