The shape of a day in Piha
Planning a day in Piha? Discover our favourite way to spend it, from coffee and local art to KiteKite Falls, the beach and dinner at Aryeh.
Picture this. The sun comes up over the hill behind Piha and casts a light across Lion Rock that edges the beach into the day.
The first surfers have already paddled out into the morning swell and yesterday's footprints have disappeared beneath the tide.
You can see them from your bed, or maybe out on the deck - admiring their tenacity, and wonder about joining a surf lesson later in the day.
Some places ask very little of you.
Piha is one of them.
Private Yoga Session
Armed with a yoga mat it unfurls beneath the pōhutukawa, and the soundtrack is from birdsong and breaking wave, rather than a carefully curated playlist. Deep breaths come more easily, you let the rhythm of the ocean set the pace.
Stroll for coffee at Murray
Murray Cafe, IMG: Ang Sarap
A wander into the village down the tree lined street, across a grassy field and over an artistically shaped foot bridge, the discovery of people milling about and a sign stating “830 Coffee”.
Some rituals transcend. Here coffee is practically its own pastime. The locals linger over coffee at Murray's and nobody seems in any kind of hurry.
In fact, it seems as though slow is the preferred option. It means more time to chat candidly, loudly, kindly and even though you don’t know them, they are friendly and inclusive.
They ask where you’re from, what drew you to this place. The knowing smile of discovery, having experienced it themselves, be it recently or long ago, they remember well their first time to Piha like it was yesterday. It was life changing, they tell you.
West Coast Art Gallery
A few steps away, the West Coast Gallery offers another kind of pause.
Paintings, sculpture and photography created by artists whose lives are shaped by this coastline and the Waitākere Ranges.
Browse slowly.
You might leave with a piece for your wall, or simply a deeper appreciation for the place you're standing in.
KiteKite Falls
As the day unfolds, head inland.
Within minutes, the salt air gives way to cool native bush as the track winds towards Kitekite Falls. Towering trees filter the light overhead, birdsong replaces the sound of the surf, and eventually the waterfall reveals itself.
Leave your shoes on the rocks.
Sit with your feet in the water.
Dive into the pool if you're feeling brave.
Or simply stay still for a while.
Aryeh Restaurant

Dinner at Aryeh is the perfect way to end the day. Seasonal food, thoughtful wine and conversations that meander without anyone checking the time. The sort of place where dessert feels less like a course and more like permission to stay a little longer.
A day here rarely feels full in the conventional sense. There are no long lists. No urgency. Just enough movement, enough stillness, and enough space between them for your mind to catch up.
